To ensure affordability and supply of essential medicines National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) sets out to deliver a robust move in managing exploitation of prices.
NPPA has recently issued three notices to tackle this situation, addressing ceiling price and retail price for over 40 drugs. This has been done under Drugs Price Control Order (DPCO) 2013. The notice issued on 1st August authorises the ceiling prices of scheduled drugs, for all manufacturers of scheduled and generic medicines have been conveyed to set or revise their ceiling prices according to the new mandate for commonly used drugs such as Ipratropium and Diltiazem.
The next mandate addressed, retail prices for non scheduled new marketed drugs. This focused on the combined drug therapy strategies.
Market based retailed price competition was addressed in another mandate, via market analysis. The objective of this mandate was to lower the price of drugs to an affordable rate ensuring the fair pricing. This was done using Moving Annual Turn-over(MAT) and Price To Retailers (PTR) data. More than thirty such commonly used drugs were addressed and their percentage price was reduced such as Vit D3 oral drops.
With the growing demands of safeguarding public health, such steps taken by NPPA restores the faith of the residents in the government, along with highlighting NPPA’s commitment towards curbing exploitation and improving transparency.
