Write Prescriptions in Capitals or Go Digital : Punjab & Haryana High Court Orders

In a recent move towards safeguarding public health care the Punjab & Haryana High Court has mandated that all doctors across government and private sectors in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to issue medical prescriptions and diagnostic notes in capital letters or via digital soft copies. The court underscored that patients must be able to comprehend their treatment clearly, linking the same with Article 21 of Indian Constitution.

The fundamental Right to Life.Acknowledging the risks associated with illegible handwriting, the court has instructed the National Medical Commission and state authorities in charge to incorporate prescription legibility into medical education. The Court recognized and flagged PGIMER Chandigarh’s “Doctor Desk” e-prescription system and asked for its adoption in upcoming years.

This landmark step ensures patient safety by reducing medical errors with digitalization of medical record maintenance.
